For the moment everything feels too large

You may be in true panic. Start smaller than the problem.

I am not going to tell you that nothing is wrong, because something may be very wrong. I am going to help you take one useful step before fear chooses for you.

First

Check the kind of help you need.

Are you in immediate danger?

In the United States, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room in a life-threatening situation. Move toward safety if you can. A grounding practice is not the whole task when the danger is real.

Call 911 now

Are you in a mental-health crisis?

In the United States, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline connects you with a trained crisis counselor. You do not have to become composed before asking for help.

Could a legal or workplace deadline be running?

Do not assume reflection, an internal response, or a mindfulness practice pauses it. Seek timely guidance.

60 seconds

A place to begin.

This does not solve the situation. It gives your attention somewhere solid enough to choose what comes next.

  1. 1

Feel your feet, your hands, or another point of contact with the chair or floor.

  2. 2

Take one comfortable breath. Let the exhale be a little longer without forcing it. If breath feels wrong, name three things you can see instead.

  3. 3

Name three facts you know right now.

  4. 4

Ask: “What is the next useful step—not every step?”

What this is

Mindfulness is attention—not denial.

Mindfulness is present-moment awareness without immediately judging, fixing, or obeying what arises.

It is not forced forgiveness. It is not passive endurance. It is not a legal strategy by itself. It can help you state the facts more clearly, choose your timing, communicate steadily, and avoid reactions that make a hard situation harder.
